Bring your anxieties and your hardships, your doubts and your fears, your conflicts and your failures. What better time to do this than during Lent.  Every time you come to Mass make it a habit to offer your entire self to God, and in this way you make big strides to happiness and a future life with God for eternity.

Happy Birthday Jesus

 Happy Birthday Jesus! 

When you look upon the Sacred Host after the consecration at Mass, or you kneel in front of the Sacred Host displayed in the Monstrance in the chapel, you look upon Jesus Himself, the Son of God.  We believe the bread and wine have ceased to exist after the Consecration, so that it is the adorable body and blood of the Lord Jesus that from then on are really before us under the sacramental species of bread and wine, as the Lord willed it, in order to give Himself to us as food and to associate us with the unity of His Mystical Body.

During this season of gift giving please take a few minutes to find a quiet place to sit and free your mind of all the clutter of secular Christmas; sincerely thank Our God for the priceless gift of His Divine Son.  It’s a gift the true value of which cannot be fully appreciated this side of Heaven.

So if you’re asked ‘What did you get for Christmas?’; I hope you would respond ‘I received the gift of greatest value anyone on earth could hope for!’  (originally published Dec 25, 2022)

Truly Present - No Mistake

The fathers of Vatican II point out that Christ is indeed present in a variety of ways - in the very intelligibility of the universe, in the gathered assembly at Mass, in the reading of the Scriptures, in the person of the priest - but he is “really, truly, and substantially” present, that is to say, in a qualitatively different way, in the Eucharistic elements.  Thomas Aquinas gave voice to the same conviction when he said that the power of Christ is operative in the other sacraments, but Christ himself is present in the sacrament of the altar.  

Experience his true presence by sitting silently in the chapel and letting his Being wash over you.  If you’re not a regular Adorer we, like Our Lord, invite you to visit and feel his presence.  Once you experience it, you’re encouraged to make a weekly appointment to spend an hour with him.  We all know how important compound interest is to our retirement account; but do you realize that time spent in his presence compounds the value of grace we earn in our heavenly account?

There has been a deeper grasp by the Church of every aspect of the mystery of the Eucharist. But one that merits special attention is the growing realization, not only of Christ’s sacrificial oblation in the Mass, but of His grace-filled presence outside of Mass.

“It is on this doctrinal basis that the worship of adoring the Eucharist was founded and gradually developed as something distinct from the Sacrifice of the Mass.  The reservation of the Sacred Species for the sick and those in danger introduced the praiseworthy custom of adoring the Blessed Sacrament which is reserved in our churches.  This practice of adoration, in fact, is based on strong and solid reasons.  For the Eucharist is at once  Sacrifice and a Sacrament: but it differs from the other Sacraments in this that it not only produces grace, but contains, in a permanent manner, the Author of grace Himself.  When, therefore, the Church bids us adore Christ hidden behind the Eucharistic veils and pray to Him for the spiritual and temporal favors of which we ever stand in need, she manifests living faith in her divine Spouse who is present beneath these veils, she professes her gratitude to Him and she enjoys the intimacy of His friendship.”

(Encyclical Mediator Dei - 1947 Pius XII - paragraph 131)

The key to seeing why there should be a Eucharistic worship distinct from the Mass is that the Eucharist is Jesus Christ.  No less than His contemporaries in Palestine adored and implored Him for the favors they needed, so we should praise and thank Him, and implore Him for what we need.

Of What Use Is Adoration?

To me that seems like a silly question.  The Church teaches the benefit of Adoration is second only to that of the Holy Mass.  But, like the Mass, if we want to get the most advantage we have to approach it with the right intention and right mindset.

When you make Adoration of God your first priority, heaven and earth open to you and Jesus lavishes you with his grace and fills your heart with his infinite Love to the point of bursting.  Adoration changes you from the inside out, and your Love relationship with God, with your neighbor, and with yourself will never be the same.

The link below is to a short article about how much the world needs Adoration.  Recently we have heard Church leaders state that Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is one of the best ways to work our way out of the current crises within the Church.  I hope you will take a moment to read and reflect.  And after, if you are not a regular Adorer, I pray you will be moved to want to join the Adoration Ministry and sign up for a permanent hour in the presence of God.

Interesting to note that the article mentions ... in Lourdes most miracles take place during the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.  A little further in the article is says the same is true in Medjugorje.  Not a coincidence.
